Erythrocytes are anaerobic. Why is this advantageous for the organism(human)?

by being anaerobic, they dont have to carry around mitochondria, so the space that would normally be taken up by a nucleus and mitochondria, among other organelles, can be used by RBC to transport oxygen. And like said before, so they dont use the oxygen that they are carrying...
