Mainstream Culture vs Subculture?

Im writing a paper on Urban Contemporary Music and i ran into stop lock. I cant seem to figure out if its mainstream or subculture. I want to say mainstream but i cant seem to make myself sure of my answer. If anyone could tell me what separates mainstream culture from subculture it would help me come to my own conclusion and would be much appreciated
