Why did God let the Holocaust happen to his chosen people?

God in the bible has been described as vengeful, loving and always powerful, but always ultimately on the side of the Jewish nation despite their transgressions. The exile to Babylon didn't even come close to comparing with the horrors of the Holocaust. How has the Jewish and Christian view of God been changed or shaped by this tragic and barbarous event?
