Why do people become emo or scene?

I mean, those are completely pointless, commercialist subcultures. I honestly do not see why anyone would be a member of them. One can be depressed without dressing like a clone or listening to bad music. I'm genuinely curious about this. Why would you want to be emo? I want a good answer on this. I am not just trying to make a point. I really want to know what the motivation is.
